New for 2022!!

Show Format and Classes for 2022

The MTPA will follow the rules laid out by the Canadian Team Cattle Penning Association. Please check for https://canadianpenning.com/rules/ to review the rules for 2022.

The MTPA will offer 4 classes in 2022:

  • An unlimited pick one/draw one 5 class with a 75 second time limit.
    • Explanation: Any rider may enter an unlimited number of times in this class individually. The show secretary will establish teams at the show. If a rider chooses to pick a team, the team cannot be rated higher than 5 and each rider on the team must be available for one draw team for every pick team. This allows mix and match of all members at the show!

  • An unlimited pick one/draw one 8 class with a one-second incentive based on the highest rated team in the class.
    • Explanation: any rider may enter this class individually an unlimited number of times. We will make up the teams for you at the show. If you choose to pick a team the team cannot be rated higher than 8 and you must be available for 1 draw team for every pick team. This allows mix and match of our members at the show. If a team is made up of riders such that the total rating is less than 8, this team will get a 1 second advantage for every number less than 8 e.g., a number 4 team will have an 4 second incentive subtracted from their time of the run. This will level the playing field when running against more experienced teams.

  • An unlimited pick one/draw one Open Class with a one-second time incentive based on the highest rated team in the class.
    • Explanation: any rider may enter this class individually an unlimited number of times. We will make up the teams for you at the show. If you choose to pick a team the team there is no limit to how high the team is rated and you must be available for 1 draw team for every pick team. This allows mix and match of our members at the show. Each pick or draw team that is lower than the highest team in the class will get a 1 second advantage for every number less than the highest team e.g. If the highest team in the class is 12, then a number 4 team will have an 8 second incentive subtracted from their time of the run. This will level the playing field when running against more experienced teams.

  • An unlimited entry Youth class that will be a drawn with one adult and 2 youth.
    • In this class the youth riders will do all the herd work while the adult will work the line.

Additional information:

Entries are usually made the week before the show. The central entry site will be posted here.

In all the classes a rider may simply enter individually any number of times in any of the classes

However, the limiting factor of how big a show we have and how many total runs is dictated by the number of cattle available for the show. We will make every effort to provide the opportunity for as many runs as requested but reserve the right to reduce runs if we do not have enough cattle.

What is Team Penning?

During the last decade, Team Penning has taken the horse world by storm. People from all walks of life are competing on all breeds of horses. No cowboy background is necessary to Team Pen, just saddle up and head’em for the pen! It is a sport in which the entire family can participate.

The concept of Team Penning is three riders attempt to separate three identically numbered cattle from a herd of approximately 30 milling cattle, drive them the length of the arena, and then attempt to corral them in the pen; hence, the name “Team Penning”. To add excitement and crowd appeal, this feat must be completed within a designated time frame, and of course, the fastest time wins. As you can well imagine, uncooperative cattle, fast horses and howling participants ensure enormous crowd appeal.

The roots of Team Penning are steeped in western heritage, back to the days of cattle drives. It has developed into a sport in which anyone who can ride a horse can participate. Team Penning offers the opportunity to enjoy our western roots and enjoy the company of some of the finest folks that ever wore boots!
